She labeled it Photo 51 — the 51st in a series of experiments.\n\nThe image showed, unmistakably, a helical structure.\n\nWithout Franklin's knowledge, her colleague Maurice Wilkins showed the photograph to James Watson. Watson and Francis Crick used it as a critical piece of evidence in building their model of the DNA double helix — a model they published in 1953.\n\nIn 1962, Watson, Crick, and Wilkins shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. Franklin had died four years earlier, at 37, of ovarian cancer. The Nobel Prize is not awarded posthumously.\n\nPhoto 51 is one of the most consequential photographs ever taken.
