It is the smallest number expressible as the sum of two cubes in two different ways.\"\n\n1³ + 12³ = 1729. 9³ + 10³ = 1729. No smaller number has this property.\n\nRamanujan was a self-taught mathematician from Madras who had received almost no formal training and had no access to most mathematical literature. Hardy brought him to Cambridge. The journals he kept — full of theorems he derived on his own, many of which took decades for other mathematicians to prove — remain one of the most astonishing records in the history of mathematics.\n\nHe died at 32.
