In 1802, Alexander von Humboldt climbed higher than any European had ever climbed — up the slopes of Chimborazo, in what is now Ecuador, in thin boots, without oxygen, past 19,000 feet, until the mountain simply became too dangerous to continue. He didn't reach the summit. It didn't matter. On the way up, he had measured air pressure, catalogued plants, and mapped where each species stopped appearing as the altitude changed — and by the time he came back down, he had sketched something no one had drawn before: a single diagram showing how climate, geology, and life were all connected, at every elevation, everywhere on Earth. Humboldt spent five years crossing Latin America by canoe, on foot, and on horseback, filling notebooks with everything he saw. He was the first to describe nature not as a list of separate specimens, but as one interconnected system — an idea so foundational it would later be given its own name: ecology. He returned to Europe more famous than almost anyone alive. Napoleon was jealous of him. Darwin carried his books around the world. More places are named after Alexander von Humboldt than after any other human being in history — and it started with a mountain he never finished climbing.
