Mary Anning was twelve years old when she dug a complete skeleton out of a cliff in Lyme Regis, England. The creature — an ichthyosaur, a giant marine reptile from the Jurassic — had never been identified before. She went on to discover the first complete plesiosaur, the first pterodactyl found outside Germany, and more. She taught herself geology, paleontology, and anatomy from scratch. She sold fossils from a small shop to survive. The scientific community built careers on her findings. They rarely credited her. The Geological Society of London held meetings to debate her discoveries — but wouldn't let her through the door. She died in 1847. A stained-glass window was installed in her church — the same institution that had refused to let her join. Ammonites — the spiral-shelled fossils most commonly found along that coast — were the objects she spent her life among. She is now considered one of the greatest fossil hunters who ever lived.
