Arecibo — Black

On November 16, 1974, astronomers Carl Sagan and Frank Drake used the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico to send a message into space — a 1,679-bit binary signal aimed at the globular star cluster Messier 13, roughly 25,000 light-years away. The message contained humanity's basics: the numbers one through ten, the atomic numbers of the elements that make up DNA, a double helix, a figure of a human, our solar system, and a picture of the telescope that sent the signal. Nobody expected a reply. They never got one. That was fine — it was partly a demonstration that we could. The Arecibo telescope operated for 57 years. It discovered the first binary pulsar, identified the first exoplanet system, and mapped planets with radar. In December 2020, its cables snapped and the 900-tonne receiver platform fell into the dish. The message is still traveling. At the speed of light, it will reach its target in roughly 24,975 years.
