On December 7, 1972, the crew of Apollo 17 were about 29,000 kilometres from Earth when one of them pointed a Hasselblad camera back toward home and took a photograph. It was the first time the entire planet had been captured fully lit, in a single frame, by a human being. Africa fills the center. Antarctica gleams at the bottom. Clouds swirl across the southern hemisphere. The whole thing is suspended in absolute black. The image — known as the Blue Marble — became one of the most reproduced photographs in history. It helped fuel the early environmental movement, giving people a visual sense of the planet as a single, fragile object. Apollo 17 was the last crewed mission to the moon. No human has been that far from Earth since.
