Camouflage — Yellow

In 1896, a painter named Abbott Thayer published a strange claim: that the reason a deer is dark on its back and pale on its belly has nothing to do with dirt or mud, and everything to do with light. Sunlight falls from above and casts shadow underneath any solid object — so animals that are dark on top and light below cancel that shadow out, and seem to flatten into their surroundings. He called it countershading. Today it's known as Thayer's Law, and it explains why sharks, birds, and deer all wear their colours in the same reversed order. Thayer didn't stop at theory. He became convinced that if nature had already invented the best disguise on Earth, armies should be using it. He spent years petitioning the US and British military to camouflage their ships and soldiers, staging elaborate demonstrations to prove a painted object could vanish into a landscape. Most officials dismissed him. Theodore Roosevelt mocked him publicly. He was right anyway. Within a generation, camouflage patterns modeled on the principles he described were standard issue in militaries around the world — borrowed, in the end, from a few animals and one stubborn painter who couldn't stop looking at how light falls on a body.
