The demons begin to stir." He was talking about what happens when critical thinking weakens — when superstition, misinformation, and wishful thinking fill the space that careful inquiry should occupy. He was not dismissive of wonder. He was one of the most wonder-filled scientists who ever lived. His point was that wonder without rigor is not curiosity — it is just credulity. The book remains, decades later, one of the most necessary things ever written.
