Computer Bug — Heather Grey

On September 9, 1947, the Harvard Mark II computer stopped working. Engineers traced the fault to Relay #70 — and found, lodged in the contacts, a dead moth. They pulled it out. They taped it to the logbook. The note beside it read: "First actual case of bug being found." The word "bug" had already been used informally to describe technical faults — but this gave the phrase a real, physical specimen. Grace Hopper, one of the engineers working on the Mark II, helped make the story famous. She later became one of the most important figures in the history of computing — a pioneer of compilers, programming languages, and eventually a Rear Admiral in the US Navy. The moth is now in the Smithsonian. One actual insect. The origin of a word that now touches every line of code ever written.
