In the early 1800s, a French zoologist named Georges Cuvier proposed something that sounds simple but changed everything: every part of an animal's body is functionally related to every other part. Change the teeth and the gut must follow. Change the claws and the skeleton shifts. The whole organism is a system. He called it the Principle of Correlation of Parts. And he used it to do something no one had done before: look at a single fossilized bone and reconstruct an entire extinct animal from scratch. Cuvier was the first to argue — against enormous resistance — that species could go extinct entirely. He did it by comparing living animals to fossils and showing they did not match. He identified whole worlds of creatures that had vanished from the earth. He became the founder of paleontology. Every fossil reconstruction that has followed — from pterodactyls to T. rex — rests on the logic he put down.
