Darwin's Finches — Tangerine

In 1835, the HMS Beagle anchored at the Galapagos Islands. Charles Darwin, the ship's naturalist, collected specimens from the different islands — including a group of small, unremarkable brown birds he initially paid little attention to. Years later, back in England, an ornithologist pointed out that these birds were not different species at all in the usual sense — they were all closely related finches, but with dramatically different beaks. Each beak was shaped for a different food source: seeds, insects, cactus. Each island had shaped its own version. Darwin realized what he was looking at. The same ancestor, arriving on different islands, had become different creatures over time — shaped by their environment, selected by what was available to eat. The finches became one of the clearest examples of evolution by natural selection ever found. A single species, arriving in an empty landscape, learning to become many.
