Earthrise — Royal Blue

On Christmas Eve, 1968, Apollo 8 was orbiting the moon — the first time humans had ever done so. As the spacecraft rotated, astronaut Bill Anders looked out his window and saw the Earth rising above the barren lunar horizon. He grabbed a camera. He asked Jim Lovell to pass him color film. He had seconds. He got the shot. The photograph — Earth, vivid and blue, suspended over the grey moonscape — was called Earthrise. It was credited with helping ignite the environmental movement. The world saw itself from the outside for the first time, and what it saw was something small, and luminous, and fragile. Bill Anders later wrote: "We set out to explore the moon and instead discovered the Earth." He was 35 years old when he took it.
