HMS Beagle — Maroon

In December 1831, a 22-year-old named Charles Darwin boarded the HMS Beagle as its naturalist. The ship was meant to be gone two years. It was gone five. The voyage took Darwin around the coast of South America, through the Galapagos Islands, across the Pacific to Australia and back around to England. He collected specimens constantly. He wrote observations that filled notebooks. He was seasick for much of the journey. What he saw — the finches with different beaks on different islands, the fossils of enormous extinct creatures, the living animals that seemed to echo them — gave him the raw material for a theory that would take him another twenty years to publish. He called it natural selection. On the Origin of Species came out in 1859. The Beagle voyage made it possible.
