In December 1995, astronomers pointed the Hubble Space Telescope at a tiny patch of sky near the Big Dipper — a patch so small it was the size of a pinhead held at arm's length. There appeared to be nothing there. Hubble stared at it for ten consecutive days. When the images came back, almost every object in the frame was a galaxy. Roughly 3,000 of them, in various stages of formation, at various distances from Earth. Light from the farthest ones had been traveling for over ten billion years. That tiny blank patch of sky, it turned out, was not blank. It was a window into the deep history of the universe. Astronomers immediately released all the data publicly — a practice that wasn't standard at the time. The image changed how scientists collaborate, not just what they know.
