On Christmas Day, 2021, the James Webb Space Telescope launched from French Guiana and began its journey to a point a million and a half kilometres from Earth. It had taken over thirty years to build. It folded origami-style to fit into the rocket. Over the following weeks, it unfolded in space — mirror by mirror, layer by layer — until its 6.5-metre primary mirror was fully deployed. Webb is designed to see in infrared. It can look through dust clouds that block visible light. It can observe galaxies forming just a few hundred million years after the Big Bang. The images it returned — fields of ancient galaxies, star-forming nebulae, the atmospheres of distant planets — were unlike anything seen before. It is the largest telescope ever placed in space. And it only just got started.
