Marie Curie Notebook — Midnight Blue

Marie Curie discovered polonium and radium, coined the term "radioactivity," won the Nobel Prize twice — once in Physics (1903), once in Chemistry (1911) — and remains the only person ever to receive Nobel Prizes in two different scientific fields. Her laboratory notebooks from 1899 to 1902 are kept in lead-lined boxes at the Bibliothèque Nationale de France in Paris. To look at them, you must sign a liability waiver and wear protective clothing. They are still radioactive. They will remain radioactive for approximately 1,500 years. Curie worked in a poorly ventilated shed, carrying bottles of radium and polonium in her coat pockets. She described the glow of the elements in her lab at night as looking like "faint, fairy lights." She did not know she was being poisoned. She died of aplastic anemia, caused by decades of radiation exposure, in 1934. The notebooks remain dangerous. The science within them helped build modern medicine.
