Pale Blue Dot — Midnight Blue

In 1980, Carl Sagan proposed an idea to NASA: when Voyager 1 had finished its mission and was heading out of the solar system, turn the camera around and photograph Earth one last time from as far away as possible. NASA was reluctant. The shot offered no scientific data. It meant pointing the camera dangerously close to the sun. Sagan kept pushing. On February 14, 1990, from a distance of roughly 6 billion kilometres, Voyager 1 turned around. Earth appeared in the frame as a pale blue speck — less than a single pixel — caught in a beam of scattered sunlight. Sagan wrote about the image in 1994: "Look again at that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us." The cameras were switched off shortly after the photograph was taken. They never turned on again.
