Penrose Ladder — Royal Blue

In 1958, mathematician Lionel Penrose and his son Roger — who would later win the Nobel Prize in Physics for his work on black holes — published a paper describing a staircase that went up forever and arrived back where it started. It was geometrically impossible. Each individual section looked correct. The connections between them created a loop with no exit. When Roger Penrose had first seen M.C. Escher's impossible figures a few years earlier, he had been completely captivated. He and his father sent a copy of their paper to Escher. Escher wrote back. He had just made a lithograph inspired by the staircase — Ascending and Descending, 1960 — monks walking endlessly up and endlessly down, going nowhere forever. What the Penroses formalized and what Escher made visible was the same idea: that the rules that govern individual parts of a system can produce, collectively, something that cannot exist.
