Photo 51 - Rosalind Franklin — Kiwi Green

In May 1952, at King's College London, Rosalind Franklin used X-ray crystallography to capture the sharpest image of DNA ever produced. She labeled it Photo 51 — the 51st in a series of experiments. The image showed, unmistakably, a helical structure. Without Franklin's knowledge, her colleague Maurice Wilkins showed the photograph to James Watson. Watson and Francis Crick used it as a critical piece of evidence in building their model of the DNA double helix — a model they published in 1953. In 1962, Watson, Crick, and Wilkins shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. Franklin had died four years earlier, at 37, of ovarian cancer. The Nobel Prize is not awarded posthumously. Photo 51 is one of the most consequential photographs ever taken. It revealed the shape of the molecule that carries the instructions for all life on Earth.
