Pioneer Plaque — Royal Blue

Pioneer 10 was launched in March 1972. It was the first spacecraft designed to travel beyond our solar system. Carl Sagan had a few weeks' notice. He needed a message to attach to it. He designed the plaque with Frank Drake. His then-wife, Linda Salzman Sagan, drew the images. The plaque was gold-anodized aluminum, six inches by nine inches. It showed a hydrogen atom (a universal reference point), a pulsar map indicating Earth's location in the galaxy, a diagram of our solar system, and a man and woman — the woman's hand, controversially, was not raised in greeting. Pioneer 10 is now somewhere beyond the outer solar system, still traveling. It has been moving for over fifty years. The plaque is still attached. If another civilization finds it millions of years from now, they will know someone was here.
