Ramanujan Taxi — Red

In 1918, the mathematician G.H. Hardy took a taxi to visit Srinivasa Ramanujan, who was ill in a hospital near London. The cab number was 1729. Hardy mentioned it in passing, calling it a rather dull number. Ramanujan, lying in bed, replied immediately: "No, it is a very interesting number. It is the smallest number expressible as the sum of two cubes in two different ways." 1³ + 12³ = 1729. 9³ + 10³ = 1729. No smaller number has this property. Ramanujan was a self-taught mathematician from Madras who had received almost no formal training and had no access to most mathematical literature. Hardy brought him to Cambridge. The journals he kept — full of theorems he derived on his own, many of which took decades for other mathematicians to prove — remain one of the most astonishing records in the history of mathematics. He died at 32. The taxi story became one of the most famous anecdotes in all of mathematics.
