In 1543, Nicolaus Copernicus published On the Revolutions of the Heavenly Spheres. It proposed that the Earth moves around the sun — not the other way around. He reportedly received the first printed copies on the day he died. For over a thousand years, the standard model had placed the Earth at the center of the universe, with the sun, moon, planets, and stars all revolving around it. The Church held this view. Most astronomers worked within it. Copernicus overturned it with mathematics and patient observation. He was cautious — he delayed publication for years. But the idea he released into the world could not be contained. Galileo was tried for defending it. Giordano Bruno was burned for taking it further. By Newton's time, a century and a half later, the heliocentric model was nearly universal. The word revolution — as in political upheaval, sudden fundamental change — comes from the title of Copernicus's book.
