Sputnik — Olive Green

On October 4, 1957, the Soviet Union launched a polished metal sphere about the size of a beach ball into low Earth orbit. It weighed 83 kilograms and had four radio antennas trailing behind it. For three months, Sputnik 1 orbited the Earth every 98 minutes. Amateur radio operators around the world could hear its beep. People stepped outside at night to watch a dot of light cross the sky. It was the first artificial satellite ever placed in orbit. Nothing made by human hands had ever left the Earth before. The effect in the United States was acute. The same rocket technology that put a satellite in orbit could deliver a nuclear warhead. The space age and the arms race arrived at the same moment. NASA was founded the following year. Sputnik re-entered the atmosphere and burned up on January 4, 1958.
