Turing's Pattern — Lilac

In 1952, two years before his death, Alan Turing published a paper called The Chemical Basis of Morphogenesis. It asked a question that had puzzled biologists for centuries: how does a uniform mass of identical cells become a complex organism with stripes, spots, and structure? His answer: reaction-diffusion. Two chemicals interacting and spreading at different rates can spontaneously produce regular patterns from a homogeneous starting point. At the time, the paper was largely ignored. Turing was better known for breaking the Enigma code during the Second World War and for laying the foundations of computer science. The biology paper seemed like a strange detour. Decades later, scientists found his patterns everywhere — in the stripes on zebrafish, the spots on leopards, the ridges on fingerprints, the spacing of hair follicles. The mathematics he described was real. He had figured out one of the rules by which nature makes itself.
