Voyager Golden Record — Ocean Blue

In 1977, NASA was about to launch the Voyager spacecraft — two probes that would fly through the outer solar system and then keep going, indefinitely, into interstellar space. Carl Sagan's committee had a few weeks to decide what humanity should say, in case anyone ever found the spacecraft. They chose a 12-inch gold-plated copper disc — a phonograph record. On it: greetings in 55 languages, 90 minutes of music from across the world, sounds of Earth (thunder, surf, birds, a mother and child), 116 images including DNA diagrams and photographs of humans at work and play. Instructions for playback were engraved on the cover in symbolic language. The committee's inscription, read aloud, says: "This is a present from a small, distant world, a token of our sounds, our science, our images, our music, our thoughts and our feelings. We are attempting to survive our time so we may live into yours." Voyager 1 is now over 24 billion kilometres from Earth — the farthest human-made object in existence. The record is still on board.
